Here are the preliminary results for the Bubble Detector Positioning Survey that we started earlier this week.  We have a nice international distribution of opinions rendered here- and I want to thank all of you for taking the time to respond as well as leaving your comments- those were very enlightening IMO 🙂

Its the only negative pressure region of the circuit in which air has a higher likelihood of being pulled into circuit.. Has saved me more than once.
Air detected post oxy would shut down pump. It may not be purged by the perfusionist, but it could be purged at the field if the art cannula has a stopcock. At the very least the patient would not see the embolism. If it were placed prior to the centrifugal pump you essentially turned your air detector into a 2nd level detector.
Stop air asap – easier to reprime
If there is a leak or air entrainment after the oxygenator I want the electric arterial clamp to engage.
Cuz one should be watching and aware, but stuff happens. It is easier to debubble a centrifuge imho.
The level detector is my first line of defense, so it doesn’t make sense to me to put the bubble detector basically right beside it. On the arterial line, I have one last safeguard before the blood goes to the patient since there’s no longer a visible ALF past the oxy to give me peace of mind
Because in this way you have to measure a real flow, without accidental pressure drop.
Personally I feel If air we caught up by air in the circuit then it’s better to get noticed right there in the beginning it self rather then it shas to travell through the cone and oxygenator
To detect air and stop the pump as soon as possible
On a centrifugal, is want to ensure no air would get into the centrifugal head. This would seem to be the safetest placement, to me, as if would prevent entry and the rest of the circuit should be air free.
We have a recirculation line on a 3/8-3/8-1/4 Y connector, so if air is detected we can easely recirc here to the card.reserv.
Air doesn’t get into the rest of the circuit. Also easy to refill the reservoir and resume CPB
Post oxy but pre recirc line so I could de-air via recirc if needed. I have a level detector so don’t feel the requirement for pre head. If air entered via oxy I would like to know
Better if something happened with oxy no air will go to patient.
Want to know what is coming thru the filter if anything and then be able to work on a fix.
#1 site for air entrainment. Preventing it from getting into pump head is the 1st and foremost goal. Once it’s in the centrifugal pump, it’s become foamy and integrated filters are less proficient at removing foamy air
Allows CP to stop and air rise back into reservoir, or able to open recirc post oxy to scavenge air if it passes through oxy
I want to catch the air before it gets to the oxygenator so I can remove it with the purge or recirc line.
Detect air at earliest moment as once past MO very little recourse
Prevent air from entering centrifugal head
Safety, last chance to catch air before it reaches patient
