We use some Haemonetics Cellsaver 5's at an inherited facility for knees and hips.
At the end of the surgery the cardiotomy had 800mL in it, of which 500mL was ACD. The other 300mL was blood and wash.
I was called to spin it down when the volumes were 1200mL in the cardiotomy and 700mL of ACD used, This would mean there was at least 500mL of undiluted blood from the patient.
I ran the machine which used the 1200mL and then stopped and asked for more volume. I forced the unit to wash and returned 250mL to the patient.
There are no manuals for these machines here,so my question is: What is the minimum volume of blood versus ACD that will allow the machine to function correctly?
If I was having hip or knee surgery I would forgo the price of the cellsaver and eat a couple of rare steaks instead!
