    Posted: Sep 29 2007 at 1:12pm

AmSECT held its 15th Annual (NABM) "New Advances in Blood Management" meeting in Kansas City MO Sept 20-22 and was well attended by Perfusionists and MD's internationally. NABM’s mission is to disseminate the latest advancements and technology dealing directly with blood management for the betterment of patients. From the foundational basics to a view into new and future advances, this meeting offered insight from global opinion and direction from leaders across all disciplines in medicine. Speakers reflected the current state-of-the-art for blood management with emphasis placed on those interventions that have been scientifically shown, through techniques of evidenced-based medicine to promote the enhancement of patient outcome. Perfusionists traditionally circulate and manage blood as the crux of their profession and no other group, discipline or field has more direct contact with the surgical patient's autologous whole blood for management than that of a Perfusionist.

In a series of task force meetings over the past 2 years it was announced that AmSECT has taken blood management a step further and become the leader in gathering and consolidating information for teaching all aspects of blood management for perfusionists and autotransfusionists on an international basis. The Perioperative Blood Management Taskforce (PBMT) of AmSECT has taken a leadership role in the blood management movement by training clinicians and then through the establishment of the International Board of Blood Management (IBBM) a separate entity, that will certify blood management specialists and technicians through an examination and re-certification process to ensure the highest quality and universal competency among patient care givers in the rapidly expanding field of blood management. AmSECT is working with other organizations with the same concerns about blood management to advance the specialization and recognition of individuals involved in the conduct and practice of this specialty. Overall the meeting in Kansas City was a huge success with AmSECT’s next 16th Annual NABM meeting being held in August 2008 in Jackson Hole WY (Yellowstone and Grand Tetons area), where the examination process for Autotransfusionists will be offered at this meeting. Those interested in obtaining more information about this process should please visit the AmSECT website for more information.

The annual event, known as the Business Leadership and Superior Training conference, or BLAST, brings together business and community leaders for speeches, workshops, hands-on training sessions, and networking opportunities. It also offers technology demonstrations, including the new handheld Kurzweil-National Federation of the Blind reader, which features an innovative currency-identification mode, organizers said.
